5 Chef-Approved Tips to Make Your Holiday Cooking Spectacular

Is there anything more to love about the holidays than great food? Okay, it’s a time for joy, family and giving, but we can’t deny the incredible food! For perfect dishes this year, Vanilla Zulu has some chef-approved tips, fresh from our cooking school in Brisbane, to help ease the pressure of preparing a festive feast. Shed the nerves and get ready to impress your guests while actually enjoying the process!

1. Plan Your Menu

The holidays can keep you busy, we know, but don’t leave your menu until the last minute! A well-thought-out menu is your secret weapon and you can start brainstorming ideas months in advance. Choose dishes that can be partially prepared in advance and consider a mix of hot and cold options to go easy on your oven.

2. Prep for Power

Preparation is the cooking school mantra we all need to know well. For smoother cooking on the big day, chop the vegetables, measure spices and get all your ingredients ready before you start cooking and clean as you go. This works like a charm to save precious time and reduces frantic searches when you can’t take your eye off the sizzling pan.

3. Get a Head Start

Need to marinate meat or soak the turkey in brine? Start the night before. Many dishes, like gravies, salad dressing, side dishes and certain desserts, can be made a day or two in advance.

This frees up your stovetop and your hands on the day, letting you focus on the more time-sensitive dishes. With smart pre-prep, you’ll feel relaxed in your holiday kitchen.

4. Taste and Adjust – Always!

Don't be afraid to season, taste and adjust as you go. It’s what the world’s best chefs do. A pinch more salt, a squeeze of lemon, or a dash of herbs can elevate a dish from good to unforgettable, and no one will know that you didn’t learn this tip at cooking school!

5. Keep Food Warm in the Oven

When feeding a group of people, reheating food can be challenging. Our chefs recommend using your oven as a warmer. Set it to a low temperature and cover each dish with foil. Your food will stay warm without burning, and most importantly, guests will be happy with warm, comforting holiday meals.

These tips are just the beginning! Now it’s time to learn them hands-on. Book a cooking class in Brisbane with Vanilla Zulu. Our cooking school is led by top chefs who will guide you to becoming a confident holiday host!
