School Holiday Sorted: Cook, Laugh & Make Memories Together

With the Queensland school holidays running from 3–19 April, the search for meaningful activities is on.

At Vanilla Zulu, we believe the kitchen is the best classroom on earth. Our school holiday cooking classes trade another movie day for a hands-on experience where families sizzle, stir and feast together. In this guide to making the most of the break, you will learn:

  • The science behind the sizzle and how we use the Maillard reaction and leavening to turn a recipe into a chemistry experiment.
  • Age-appropriate skill building that moves pre-teens into meal planning and gives teens the reins to lead a kitchen.
  • The "beyond the plate" benefits include how cooking boosts literacy, math and fine motor skills.
  • The holiday pricing structure with Youth (9–17) spots at $95 and Adults at $109 (or $99 for groups of 4+).

Let’s be real: By day three of the school holidays, the "I’m bored" chorus usually starts to harmonise with the glow of tablet screens.

Between 3 – 19 April, you have a chance to swap the pale "iPad face" and those mindless, glazed-over eyes for something tactile, delicious and genuinely memorable.

Round up the kids and their best mates, or team up with other parents to book a session together at Vanilla Zulu! Our fun cooking classes for kids and families work for any group (from immediate family to a big crew of friends and cousins) for a hands-on experience everyone enjoys.

Every Recipe Becomes a Chemistry Experiment Inside the Frying Pan

Most kids think science is something that only happens in a lab with a white coat, but we show them it’s happening right inside the frying pan. Our fun cooking classes explore the molecular transitions that turn raw pantry staples into high-quality meals.

Kids particularly love mastering the elasticity of hand-stretched dough in our Rustic Italian sessions or using acidity to balance out the rich basics in our Around the World workshops. These lessons are for the kids who love making mud pies in the garden and getting stuck in, the ones who want to learn how things actually work and even the future head chefs of Brisbane.

They learn how browning creates deep flavour through the Maillard reaction, watch phase changes turn steam into a raising agent for pastries, and master the emulsification that keeps a classic white sauce smooth.

Build Independence by Mastering Vital Life Skills in Our Kitchen

Cooking is a practical way to develop real independence. For pre-teens (ages 9–13), we focus on the reality of being part of a household, while for teens (14+), we suggest giving them the reins to lead the meal from start to finish.

This includes:

  • Reading through a recipe and measuring out volumes with total precision helps them sharpen their literacy and math skills without it feeling like a school lesson.
  • Handling a professional knife safely and learning the delicate art of whisking or folding ingredients builds the fine motor skills needed for a lifetime in the kitchen.
  • Learning the standard rules of food safety and hygiene ensures they understand how to keep a professional workspace clean and safe while they work.
  • Planning a Friday night family dinner and managing the shopping list teaches them the reality of living within a budget and using resources wisely.

Round Up The Whole Squad For Our Flexible Holiday Pricing

We’ve set up our holiday sessions to be as accessible as possible for families. Youth aged 9–17 are welcome to join the fun. For children aged 9–14, we do require one adult to stay and participate, ensuring you have that high-quality connection time together.

  • Youth (9–17): $95 per person.
  • Adults: $109 per person.
  • Group Special: $99 per person for groups of 4 or more (bring the cousins or the neighbours!).

These fun cooking classes for kids and families are a total win because our crew handles all the prep and cleaning.

Got little tackers not quite ready for the big kitchen yet? No problem. Book a class for yourself (yes, there is a glass of wine waiting at our licensed bar) and grab one of our professional chef's tool kits while you are here. It is the easiest way to run your own mini-masterclass at the dining table – and finally pry the kids away from Roblox.

FAQS

What are the main benefits of cooking with children?

Beyond the fun, it encourages a genuine interest in fresh food and healthy eating habits. It helps develop life skills like organisation and time management. For younger children, simple tasks like tearing herbs are great; for older kids, complex kitchen tasks provide a sense of responsibility and pride.

Why is it important to keep kids active during school holidays?

School holidays are a massive opportunity for kids to learn the real-world things that aren't taught in a classroom. They need more than just an academic focus; they need to explore, socialise, and build practical confidence. Instead of letting them veg out on the couch, getting them outside and into a high-energy cooking class, a science museum, a mountain bike park, or a local art workshop helps them truly live and learn.

Is the food we make suitable for fussy eaters?

Often, kids are more likely to try a new vegetable if they were the ones who roasted it! We find that the hands-on nature of our fun cooking classes helps break down the fear of new textures and flavours. We also cater to most dietary requirements – just let us know when you book.
